Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities

In the coming years, many larger cities have to come up with solutions for the challenges of increasing amounts of rainwater and more extreme weather. By implementing solutions that help protect densely populated and developed areas against flooding, the development of the square serves as an example to be followed when the rest of the city is to be climate-proofed. By actively making use of a city’s green areas in the fight against pollution and securing the city against cloudbursts, smart ways of handling rainwater solve a great deal of the problems, cities today are facing.

The “Montmartre” of Oslo

The square Thorbjørn Egners Plass is located in front of the church Kampen Kirke. The area around the square is known for its many traditional tree houses and is referred to as the “Montmatre” of Oslo due to the location of the church on top of a hill.

Uncompacted soil volume with Milford's Tree planting solution

The blooming cherry trees on the new square were planted in Milford's tree planting solution consisting of our soil cell system RootSpace and our irrigation and aeration system AquaAirbox.

One of the most crucial things to ensure the longevity of an urban street tree is to provide an uncompacted soil volume around the roots of the tree. In an uncompacted soil volume more water, nutrients, and airflow reaches the roots of the tree and makes it flourish.

Optimal growth conditions

Due to the many urban stressors for urban street trees such as lack of space and heavy traffic, the roots of the tree often suffer from uncompressed soil and early death. Our tree planting solution helps ensure future optimal growth conditions for the trees on Thorbjørn Egners Plass.

Beautiful view of cherry trees and the church

Due to the strategic planting of the trees, they will now bloom many springs to come, provide shade during summer, and have beautiful autumn colors during fall. The inhabitants and visitors in the Norwegian capital can now rest on the newly established benches and chairs and enjoy the beautiful view of the cherry trees and the church for many years to come.
