Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities

In the coming years, many larger cities have to come up with solutions for the challenges of increasing amounts of rainwater and more extreme weather. By implementing solutions that help protect densely populated and developed areas against flooding, the development of the square serves as an example to be followed when the rest of the city is to be climate-proofed. By actively making use of a city’s green areas in the fight against pollution and securing the city against cloudbursts, smart ways of handling rainwater solve a great deal of the problems, cities today are facing.

Exercise improves children’s ability to learn in class and some lessons can even be performed in an alternative environment to the traditional teacher and classroom scenario.   The award-winning Frederiksbjerg Skole in Aarhus has embraced these principles in its design which is characterized by its outdoor learning and play areas situated on the roof terraces of the new building.

Rooftop exercise area

A distinctive feature of the school's architecture is the focus on giving children the ability to move around and exercise more during the school day. Not just in the school's many different indoor zones, but also outside where the roof terraces create a series exciting and inviting spaces spread over four different levels across the building.

The roof terraces and indeed the school in its entirety have been designed with the concept of playful movement and learning in mind.

Customised solution

To provide barrier-free access and at the same time protect the building against moisture ingress from the roof terraces, our Slope roof drainage channels were installed. The channel system ensures that water is quickly and efficiently led away from the building and play surface before it causes damage to the structures.  The design of the channel system means that it meets all the requirements for establishing barrier-free access.

Installing traditional drainage channels on a roof terrace can be challenging and time-consuming due to the roof structure underneath the channel.  Roof structures are traditionally constructed with an integrated fall and to allow easy installation the slope channel system is height adjustable.

As the terrace area is a play area for children and must be a safe space, the channel system has been designed in such a way that the gratings itself cannot removed without the use of a special tool.  This removes the risk of accidental injury but still allows the maintenance teams to carry out the required cleaning and maintenance of the system.

Frederiksbjerg School has won several awards, including School Building of the Year 2016, 2018 Architecture Master Prize and the Project Prize at the Building Awards 20.
