Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities

In the coming years, many larger cities have to come up with solutions for the challenges of increasing amounts of rainwater and more extreme weather. By implementing solutions that help protect densely populated and developed areas against flooding, the development of the square serves as an example to be followed when the rest of the city is to be climate-proofed. By actively making use of a city’s green areas in the fight against pollution and securing the city against cloudbursts, smart ways of handling rainwater solve a great deal of the problems, cities today are facing.

Growing cities require more inviting spaces

Like many other cities, the Swedish capital Stockholm is growing, requiring additional housing, new traffic solutions, and more recreational spaces in the future.

To meet this new reality, The City of Stockholm has chosen to transform the southeastern district Kärrtorp due to its optimal location and conditions for sustainable travel.

The project resulted in 160 new apartments spread out on three residential buildings and an upgrade of the bus square and public spaces in the district.

Small green islands spread around Näskubben

One of the goals was to create inviting spaces, attractive for both local businesses and the residents and visitors in Kärrtorp.

We contributed with our edging system Contrast Freestyle (Milford DK, SE, NO, ENG) for the customized planters in the residential area Näskubben.

The raised planters frame the path system and create an intimate atmosphere between the buildings and provide room for different types of greenery that give life to the built environment and the surroundings.

The residents and visitors in the Näskubben can walk around and enjoy the small green islands spread around the neighborhood.

Edging with a neat top finish

The edging is made of corten steel and is fully flexible.

When looking closer, the edges have a detailed finish and are "single folded inwards" – a neat top detail.

Contrast Freestyle offers endless opportunities for adding these smaller details to the steel edging, giving the possibility to add unique looks and live up to any kind of aesthetical wish of the designer/landscape architect.
