Sollentuna Hospital

The renovation of Sollentuna hospital in Stockholm is an example of how health isn’t something that should only be present within the hospital building, but also in the outdoor environment.

Smart rainwater management solves more problems in the cities

In the coming years, many larger cities have to come up with solutions for the challenges of increasing amounts of rainwater and more extreme weather. By implementing solutions that help protect densely populated and developed areas against flooding, the development of the square serves as an example to be followed when the rest of the city is to be climate-proofed. By actively making use of a city’s green areas in the fight against pollution and securing the city against cloudbursts, smart ways of handling rainwater solve a great deal of the problems, cities today are facing.

Establishing more nature in the cities has many advantages – health being one of them. Planted trees create a comforting environment. In addition to this the biggest trees can absorb up to 150 kg CO2, making the air cleaner.

These are examples of how nature is an advantage to both the physical and mental health of humans.

A hospital with focus on nature

The renovation of Sollentuna hospital should transform the building to be in harmony with the surrounding green environment.

With a main focus on Edviken bay, the landscape architects worked with nature as a theme, where elements from trees and plants were incorporated in places such as the entrance and waiting room.

Outside by the entrance the patients and visitors are met by trees and plant beds. The green environment is a contrast to the sterile look often seen at hospitals.

Plant beds in many forms and sizes

With our Contrast Freestyle™, the plant beds by the entrance to the hospital are formed in several ways.

At Milford, we often experience how architects and landscape architects want to use steel edging, but without the limitations often connected to them. ContrastFreestyle is a popular edging system because the choice of form and size are entirely the decision of the architects. This way they can get just the expression they imagined.
