Contrast Freestyle is a flexible system with endless opportunities. Wyatt Harding, CEO at Milford, shares a selection of his favorites projects with Contrast Freestyle, where Milford – in close collaboration with landscape architects – managed to combine design and functionality.

Contrast freestyle is custom made – both in height, shape, and choice of materials – and gives the landscape architects the free imagination to create a unique design that fulfills their visions for functionality and aesthetic pleasure.

Wyatt Harding's three favorite projects with Contrast Freestyle show the many possibilities of the system.

Kammakartorget: A unique design solution in a combination with corten steel and wood

The newly updated public square Kammakartorget in the Swedish town Enköping, northwest of Stockholm, is a great example of how our Contrast Freestyle  – together with art installations, outside furniture, and trees  – contributed to a recreational square and more inviting environment.

Contrast Freestyle was used around green planting beds along with our wooden benches. The wood in combination with corten steel gives a striking contrast and harmonizes well with the vegetation in the planting beds.

For the benching system, we made a unique design solution, where the corten steel edges lean outwards, instead of being straight. This gives the steel edges a unique design and also makes more room beneath the added benching so that with time the rusty corten steel material does not come in contact with one’s clothes.

With a unique design, the benches not only have an aesthetic expression, they also live up to the functional intentions requested by the landscape architects.

“At Milford we love working on urban projects and creating liveable spaces. This is a typical example of how the landscape architects want to combine steel, wood, and lighting to create an amazing plaza not only for daytime but also at night”, says Wyatt Harding.

Today, Kammarkartorget allows for pleasant city life and is enjoyed daily by the residents and visitors in Enköping.

Hagdalen: Colorful, powder coated benches with curved edges in various levels

The park Hagdalen is located in the suburbs of Stockholm. The park consists of a nature area and is filled with recreational activities to the joy of the people living close to the park. In 2019 the park became part of the renovation project Greener Stockholm due to wear and tear. The main focus was to create a safe park that was accessible to everyone.

For the play area, Milford delivered Contrast Freestyle for a bench system that divides the playground into different areas. The various levels and the curved edges of the benches give a dynamic and untraditional expression to the playground.

The design, color palette, and choice of wood were developed in close collaboration with the landscape architects. Because the benches are custom made, the landscape architects got exactly the look and features they wanted. Instead of corten steel, the benches are powder coated in a bright turquoise blue color, giving new life to the playground.

"The project in Hagdalen park is an excellent example of how alternatives to corten steel can be used. With a stunning painted finish, this steel edging feature makes the project unique, especially when combined with the bench. Using our special painted finish means the specifier can put a unique touch to their project to make it original", Wyatt explains.

Today, the benches invite the children to crawl around, play with sand or take a break while eating their lunch boxes. The benches can also be used by the adults, as they sit and watch.

Embryot: A roundabout with a raised planter in a beautiful and organic shape

How do you combine traffic- and safety functions with aesthetics and sustainable benefits?

In an industrial area in Stockholm, Sweden, a newly built roundabout stands out with a center of a raised planter in a unique and dynamic shape.

The choice of form and size of the raised planter was entirely up to the landscape architects. This resulted in a non-traditional roundabout with a planter in a beautiful and organic shape, formed with the flexible Contrast Freestyle steel structures.

When darkness falls, lights all around the edge of the raised planter light up the roundabout. This gives it a new look during nighttime and makes it visible to drivers and cyclists.

“I am very pleased with the outcome of this project as we have managed to use value engineering on the design, so it fulfilled the landscape architects plan and also the contractors budget. The results are stunning and show the capabilities of Milford and Contrast Freestyle”, Wyatt ends.
